"pre-existing Medical Conditions And Travel Insurance Coverage In Australia"

I read Mr Bernard Ng Hak Jeng's letter (Watch out for clause on pre-existing conditions; 13 May) with interest, and believe that the solution lies in the hands of the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore. (MAS).

Single & One Trip Travel Insurance For Medical Conditions

To address concerns, negativity and public outcry on this matter, it is important for GIA and MAS to make it mandatory for all insurance companies to publish these key and key features in their travel insurance certificates:

•Per trip length limit, as some allow 30 days or 90 days of coverage; and conditions for the insured to apply for extension of coverage; And

• Relevant clauses in the main pages of the policy terms and conditions referred to above.

I refer to ST Forum 13th May 2017 "Watch out for clauses on pre-existing conditions" and believe that the solution is in the hands of the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA)] and the MAS Financial Supervision Insurance Department.

How To Get Affordable Travel Insurance If You Suffer From Pre Existing Medical Conditions Such As Asthma

Unlike buying a life insurance policy, anyone can buy a travel insurance policy without undergoing a medical examination, even those who are terminally ill and on the verge of death.

Many travel insurance policies do not cover pre-existing medical conditions and pre-existing diagnosed medical conditions. Once diagnosed and pre-existing, it is not covered.

However, some insurance companies allow pre-existing medical condition coverage and it is published in their list of policy benefits.

To address the concerns, negativity and public outcry in this regard, it is important for MAS and GIA to now make it mandatory for all insurance companies to publish the following key and salient features in their one-page travel insurance certificates:

It's a joy to share about, and the more I share, the more it comes back in many ways and forms. Most of what I have shared is not mine. I borrowed and shared it on my blog. If you like any particular post in my blog, please feel free to share it with your loved ones, friends and contacts far and wide. You can remove my name before sending them. You can also use articles to write on the same topic or cut and paste any part of it into your article. My post is available for young and old, students too. If they wish, they can extract or plagiarize any issue to write their articles or essays. NP. ============== I share what I wrote with Facebook friends and contacts, not just Singaporeans. I'm sharing it by pasting the link method because it's easier and a shortcut instead of copy-pasting my comments in full text. Some want me to stop posting. I will stop giving comments and/or my link when others stop posting. When they stop, I stop. While they continue to leave comments, I will continue to provide my short-cut link, or short-cut-and-paste comment plus link. If I stop providing my links or comments, then by default others will be free to provide possibly one-sided comments without giving another perspective on an issue. If I remain silent, it would be my failure not to offer an opposite perspective. Some want me to keep quiet and stop posting. If I accede to their demands, it would be a failure to remain silent to my Facebook friends around the world. I owe it to my Facebook friends and society to comment on an issue and give an opposite perspective. ======= My contact: @yahoo.co.uk

Pre-existing conditions are generally not covered by travel medical insurance policies. By design, travel medical insurance plans cover any new injury or illness that occurs during your travels.

Pre Existing Conditions For Travel Insurance

Your travel insurance will not usually pay for treatment or care related to a pre-existing condition or health problem, including treatment to relieve symptoms or care to prevent future health problems.

However, if you need a visitor insurance plan there are options that cover medical expenses for pre-existing conditions while abroad. It is recommended to review individual plan definitions to determine the exact definition of pre-existing medical conditions.

If you are inviting your parents to visit you in the United States, this article will help you understand more about pre-existing conditions coverage benefits.

A pre-existing condition is any medical condition or health problem for which the insured person has been diagnosed, treated or is currently taking medication before the effective date of the insurance policy.

Travel Insurance & Pre Existing Medical Conditions

Travel health insurance providers will not pay for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions, but some travel insurance coverage extends to a set maximum, for unexpected worsening of the condition.

A medical condition for which you have received treatment or diagnosis prior to purchasing a travel insurance policy is considered a "pre-existing condition" by the insurance provider.

While visitor medical insurance is intended to cover you for any new medical emergencies while you are in the United States, it does not replace the health care you receive for an illness or medical condition in your home country. Most travel insurance companies do not offer coverage for pre-existing conditions. However, some plans offer cover for acute onset of pre-existing medical conditions.

Acute onset of a pre-existing condition refers to the sudden and unexpected return of a pre-existing condition that is self-limiting, rapidly progressive, and requires immediate medical attention.

What You Need To Know About Pre Existing Medical Conditions

Pre-existing conditions that gradually worsen over time (and are already present at the time your visitor insurance plan is in force) do not qualify as "acute onset" and are therefore unlikely to provide coverage for your purchased plan.

If you use a wheelchair because of a mobility disability or impaired hearing or vision, you may be eligible for coverage, as long as you have not required medical assistance or treatment related to those conditions in the previous year.

All pre-existing conditions like hypertension, asthma, diabetes, lung diseases, epilepsy, coronary problems, etc. are under the coverage, as long as they are stable for a certain period of time.

If your health is stable, you should have an easier time finding a policy that meets your needs when you travel. You will have to pay a higher premium and provide a doctor's note to get coverage in this situation.

The extent to which pregnancy is covered by health insurance is company-specific, but generally the following is true:

Read the policy document to understand the inclusions and exclusions in the travel insurance plan you shortlist to buy.

Finding a travel insurance provider that actively covers the treatment of mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can be challenging, but not impossible.

If you want mental health coverage from a travel insurance company, you may need to be evaluated before you leave. If you can show the insurance agency that you have had no mental health problems in the last 1-5 years and that you are not currently experiencing any mental health problems, you may be eligible for coverage.

When mental illness first manifests during a trip, this is another scenario in which travel insurance can provide financial protection.

You must declare your disability if you believe that doing so will require medical treatment abroad or prevent you from taking your planned trip. If you don't, travel insurance companies may not pay for any claim related to your disability or pre-existing condition. Generally, the insurance provider cannot ask you specific questions when you buy travel insurance, and the purchase process is entirely online. It would be helpful for you to connect with customer service and discuss the options and restrictions.

People with pre-existing medical conditions have few options for getting travel medical insurance when booking their trip online.
